Galaxy Disks
The disks of disk galaxies contain a substantial fraction of their baryonic matter and angular momentum, and much of the evolutionary activity in these galaxies, such as the formation of stars, spiral arms, bars and rings, and the various forms of secular evolution, takes place in their disks. The formation and evolution of galactic disks are therefore particularly important for understanding h...
متن کاملTidal thickening of galaxy disks
We have studied a sample of 24 edge-on interacting galaxies and compared them to edge-on isolated galaxies, to investigate the effects of tidal interaction on disk thickening. We found that the ratio h/z0 of the radial exponential scalelength h to the scale height z0 is about twice smaller for interacting galaxies. This is found to be due both to a thickening of the plane, and to a radial strip...
متن کاملThe Formation of Galaxy Disks
Galaxy disk formation must incorporate the multiphase nature of the interstellar medium. The resulting two-phase structure is generated and maintained by gravitational instability and supernova energy input, which yield a source of turbulent viscosity that is able to effectively compete in the protodisk phase with early angular momentum loss of the baryonic component via dynamical friction in t...
متن کاملGalaxy Masses: Disks and Their Halos
I review what we currently do and do not know about the masses of disk galaxies and their dark matter halos. The prognosis for disks is good: the asymptotic rotation velocity provides a good indicator of total disk mass. The prognosis for halos is bad: cuspy halos provide a poor description of the data, and the total mass of individual dark matter halos remains ill-constrained.
متن کاملOn the Origin of Exponential Galaxy Disks
One of the most important unresolved issues for galaxy formation theory is to understand the origin of exponential galaxy disks. We use a disk galaxy evolution model to investigate whether galaxies with exponential surface brightness profiles can be produced in a cosmologically motivated framework for disk galaxy formation. Our model follows the accretion, cooling, and ejection of baryonic mass...
